I'm looking for my first ever rifle and want to make sure it's within the budget. I usually hunt hogs where the ranges are short to moderate. What calibers and affordable rifles would you recommend?

Savage axis or ruger American fall within the low end range. Next step would be something like Weatherby vanguard. From my experience all of these shot light out. As far as caliber 308,243,7mm-08 or 270 would be excellent picks.

I’d concur with the 308. I’m fond of the 7-08 but ammo can be tough to come by. 308 will serve you well.

It’s the end of deer season. You didn’t mention your budget, but I’d strongly suggest you consider the used market. A used Remington 700ADL or Remington 788 should fit any budget and, with their short actions, provide you with just what you’re looking for.

Folks are fascinated with new guns and many will be dumping their older rifles. Take advantage of that and get an excellent rifle at a good price.

Tikka 308, 708, 6.5 Creed. Have one of each and really can't pick a favorite. Easiest to shoot is 6.5 Creedmoor. My favorite cartridge is 308 Win. 7mm08 is kind of in between.
