first time fishing with my little one

I've been thinking about taking my 5-year-old fishing since we've been chatting about it a lot lately. I don't know the first thing about fishing myself, but I came across some kid-sized rods at a local store and thought it might be a good way to start. What do you all recommend for a simple setup? I'm looking for something that's not too complicated since it'll be our first time out. Any tips on bait or places to go would help too!

You could probably find what you would need at a local Walmart. I don't know your location but if you are near Baton Rouge Brec.org has stocked public use ponds in different areas of Baton Rouge.

Nothing wrong with a cane pole, a cork, and a worm for starters, but every boy needs a Zebco 202. It's a rite of passage. I believe I was 5 when I got mine.
