My best game warden story was from when I had JUST barely avoided getting bitten by a huge cottonmouth (head back, mouth open, right between my toes), and backing slowly away from it, I very nearly tripped over the biggest alligator I'd ever seen, snoozing in the grass. This was in the Sabine Refuge, down near Hackberry.
After I collected my wits and headed back to my car, I encountered a friendly game warden on the path. He asked how I was doing, and, still kind of in shock, I told him I had just seen a HUGE 'gator. He said, "Was it by that pool to the left, right after the trail takes a sharp curve to the left?" I replied that yes, it was. He said, "Yep, that one was 14-1/2 feet last time we measured him. As far as we know, he's the biggest 'gator in the Refuge." So, it wasn't just extreme fear that made it look so big!
