Planning a trip to visit family and trying to figure out the best route. I want to bring my firearm along, but navigating through New York State is a real hassle. Avoiding NY adds a ridiculous amount of drive time, and I'm not sure it's worth it. I've heard mixed things about the laws up there, so I'm curious if anyone else has dealt with this on a road trip and what your experience was like. Any suggestions or tips would be appreciated. Doesn't have to be perfect, just looking for some guidance.

I have little useful info to offer because the only times I have visited 'gun-unfriendly' states, I flew there (no guns allowed):(.
From what I have heard from people that live in blue-states, the only way to carry a gun in your vehicle in New Yawk, is to have it locked in a box, locked in your trunk.
If the officer asks you, tell him the key to unlock the box is at your destination. :)

Locked box in the trunk works for NY, I use a cable lock too. I-84 through PA is my route, scenic and easy. Cops never asked me about guns, I keep my permit ready.
Don't you find it ironic, that the more dangerous a place is, that you visit, the more difficult it is to bring protection?
I'm surprised that the blue cesspools up there don't have a sign on the state line that says:
"Firearm required for entry."
