What shotgun works best for home defense?

I've been looking into shotguns for home defense and want some real-world opinions. I'm considering a 12-gauge for its stopping power, but I've heard the 20-gauge is easier to manage with less recoil. Not sure what's the better choice for tight spaces.

What should I focus on with barrel length and stock setup? Any specific features that stand out for home defense?

Also, I'm curious about models or brands that are reliable and user-friendly. And how critical is training? I've shot shotguns casually but never in a defensive setting. What kind of practice should I be getting into?

I have an old Rem 870 12 gauge police gun. There are some very affordable options today. Can't help with the 12 vs 20 debate. Most of my hunting is with a 16 gauge pump. I do have .410, 20 ,16 and 12's. Prefer a pump gun for hunting and the 870 police gun for self defense.
