Ran my first steel match in the rain

So I showed up thinking, “Eh, it’s just a little rain, no big deal.” Famous last words...

The pistol ran like a champ and there was not a single hiccup. I was kind of proud of it like I built the thing myself even though I did not.

The holster on the other hand, decided it wanted to become a sticky science experiment. First draw I went for it and my hand basically said “nope, we’re not doing that today.” That's not exactly what you want mid-stage when the timer is running and your brain is trying to remember which steel plate comes after which.

And the grip tape I was so proud of… yeah, turns out it performs about the same wet as it does dry, which is to say it’s doing emotional support work at best. At one point I’m standing there soaked, trying to act like I planned all of this while quietly realizing my gear and I had very different definitions of “weatherproof.”

But that’s the part that made it worth it. You don’t really learn what holds up until you run it in the exact conditions that are gonna expose it. A dry range will lie to you, rain does not.

Rain either makes you fix your gear or finally admit your gear needed fixing. Either way the match taught you something your dry weather Saturdays probably weren't going to.

That’s a good first lesson in real-world reliability. Rain doesn’t really change the fundamentals, it just shows you which parts of your setup weren’t as great as they felt in practice. Good run overall if the gun stayed consistent.

True, but rain can also exaggerate problems that only show up rarely. It’s useful data just not always representative of how the gear performs in typical conditions.

I have never shot a pistol match. Did shoot some 3D archery shoots in the rain and mud and it was interesting to say the least. My equipment held up well though.

Rain either exposes your gear or your attitude. Sometimes it does both at once during the same stage. I hope your gun handled it better than the weather did.
