It becomes unremarkable in the best way. You don't think about it much, you don't feel different. You're not hypervigilant or anxious but you're just a person who carries a tool and goes about their day. That normalization took longer than I expected and arrived more quietly than I thought it would.

I whole heartedly agree with your description.
 
It took me about eighteen months to stop feeling weird carrying just a wallet, keys, and gun. Now it’s just part of the routine, no big deal.
I used to open-carry every day when I lived in north Alabama because 'them boys' from Birmingham would come up where the 'rich-people' were, for easy pickings, but I don't down here because we have ZERO crime...

When a criminal down here does something stupid, he vanishes and gets 10-years in Angola!
